Storyline: Seroza’s best friend Dimitri describes how the people of Leningrad are creating an ice road on the frozen Lake Ladoga that will help them escape the Nazi blockade of Leningrad. He urges Seroza to join him in taking the Road of Life to freedom. (A note about the staging of this song: as Dimitri sings, the scene he describes of workers creating a road of ice suddenly appears onstage, with workers holding flickering lanterns aloft as “the miracle in the making” becomes real.)
